Hearing aids have come a long way over the last few years. They are smaller and more discreet than ever before. We offer a wide array of high-quality hearing aids. If you are struggling with hearing loss, our staff can help you find the perfect hearing aids to meet the demands of your lifestyle.

Are you concerned that your hearing is not quite as good as it used to be? If so, you may want to consider getting a hearing evaluation from the experts. When you need hearing aids in Los Angeles, Marina del Rey, Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach, Torrance or Long Beach there is no better choice than our team. Before you come in, it is important that you know a little bit about this great hearing loss solution. That is why we have outlined the basics of hearing aids below.

How do Hearing Aids Work?

Hearing aids are compact electronic devices that are worn in or behind the ear. They include three core components: a speaker, a microphone, and an amplifier. Hearing aids detect sounds with the microphone and make these noises louder so that the wearer can hear. In addition to amplifying sounds, today’s sophisticated hearing aids also reduce background noise and they utilize artificial intelligence to further improve the hearing experience.

There are several styles of hearing aids, which include:

In-the-Ear
Behind-the-Ear
Mini BTE
In-the-Canal
Completely-in-Canal

Our team will discuss each option with you in greater detail. We will help you find the best choice for your condition, budget and lifestyle.

Choosing the Right Style for Your Needs

The right hearing aid for you will depend on the severity and cause of your hearing loss. Our team will determine the extent of your condition by conducting a hearing evaluation. We will discuss the costs and benefits of each option so that you can make an informed decision.

When making your decision, you should consider several factors. Find out which features are most useful to alleviate your condition. You should also determine if the hearing aids include a trial period. For example, all of our hearing aids include a 45-day trial.

Hearing Aid Fitting

Unlike large department stores like Costco, American Hearing and Balance will precisely fit you for your new hearing aids. We make sure that your hearing aids are made just for your ears, which results in improved performance and comfort.

In addition to fittings, we also provide deep cleanings, during which time our staff will gently but thoroughly clean out your ear canal and your hearing aids. We recommend coming in every six months for this deep cleaning to prevent complications such as ear infections or irritation.

Advantages of Digital Hearing Aids

At American Hearing and Balance, all of our hearing aid styles are digital. These hearing aids offer several benefits, including:

  • Selective sound amplification
  • Feedback reduction
  • Improved sound quality

Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids

The buzz about over-the-counter hearing aids.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Reauthorization Act of 2017 instructed the FDA to develop regulations for OTC hearing aids to establish accessible and affordable hearing aids in the U.S.

In October 2022, the over-the-counter hearing aid act finalized its guidelines, creating a new category of FDA-approved OTC hearing aids. These devices will ultimately make hearing devices more affordable and do not require a hearing aid prescription or an evaluation by an audiologist.

Who can get over-the-counter hearing aids?

Over-the-counter hearing aids are for individuals over 18 with mild to moderate hearing loss. However, as there are different types of hearing loss, OTC hearing aids are not suitable for everyone struggling to hear.

Drugstore reading glasses help many patients whose ability to see up close has declined with age, but they aren’t the right solution for everyone struggling with their eyesight. Similarly, OTC hearing aids are not perfect for everyone with mild to moderate hearing loss.

Are over-the-counter hearing aids right for me?

The best way to determine your eligibility for OTC hearing aids is through a hearing evaluation by an audiologist. That way, you can understand the type of hearing loss you’re experiencing and its level of severity.

American Hearing & Balance carries affordable OTC hearing aids in Los Angeles, including earbud-style listening devices. You can visit our offices to obtain a proper diagnosis and discover which hearing aids will work best for you.
